Membership in the OVWSG

Membership in the Guild runs from May 1st to April 30th of the following year. The grace period on renewals ends with the June meeting. All cheques should be made payable to: Ottawa Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild (OVWSG is okay to use).

You can mail your renewals to the OVWSG (mail is picked up once a month before meetings) or mail directly to the Membership Secretary for faster membership processing.

If a new member joins between February and April, the membership is valid until April 30th of the following year.

Members in the Ottawa Valley Weavers' and Spinners' Guild enjoy a number of privileges, including equipment rental (looms, spinning wheels, etc), borrowing priveleges from our extensive library, an online discussion group, a yearly sale, reduced fees for Resource Centre courses, monthly newsletter and monthly programs.

Meetings

Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m., Heartwood House, 153 Chapel St, Ottawa in the Gallery (first floor). Please click here for Heartwood House information and directions. No general meetings are held in July and August. In winter, listen to local radio stations (CBC1 - All in A Day,4-6 pm, and CFRA) for meeting cancellations/rescheduling. If meetings need to be cancelled, we will try to reschedule for the following Monday and this will be noted in the radio message. If the first Monday is a statutory holiday, the meeting will occur on the second Monday. New people are always welcome to attend our meetings.

Each meetings consists of a special program, a business meeting, and a social coffee break. The programs can pertain to weaving, spinning, and related fields, and are always interesting.

Equipment Rental

The Guild has weaving and spinnng equipment available for rental to Guild members for very reasonable rates. A deposit of $100 is required for each item rented. This deposit cheque will be held and returned at the end of the prearranged rental period providing there is no damage or loss. Rental fees are payable in advance for a maximum rental period of three months. Arrangements must be made to return equipment when due to avoid penalties. Please see rental contract for complete details. Special rates are in effect for July and August.

For the Guild's 100" loom: If you are planning on weaving large projects such as blankets, table cloths, rugs, etc, please contact the rental co-ordinator regarding reserving it for a specific time. If you don't have a weaving partner, perhaps we can find one for you with similar projects in mind.

Library

The guild keeps an extensive library on site covering a wide variety of topics of interest to our members. We have a substantial collection of books and periodicals pertaining to weaving, spinning, dyeing and related topics. The Guild subscribes to all the major weaving and spinning magazines.

Members are allowed to borrow books and magazines on a meeting to meeting basis. If members are unable to return items on the due date, the Librarian must be contacted prior to the metting to arrange an extension. Otherwise, be prepared to pay a Library fine. Since the Guild does not meet in July and August, materials borrowed in June are due in September. A deposit cheque of $10 per item is required for the summer period. This deposit cheque will be held and returned in September when the items are returned.

The library is opens at 7:00 pm on meeting nights, and anyone is welcome to browse.

Yahoo Group

The OVWSG has set up an internet group on Yahoo for our guild members. For those of you not familiar with Yahoo groups, it provides us with a message board, chat room, space for our photos and files and a calendar. We are already getting some interesting conversations happening on the message board and lots of photos have been uploaded too. It's free to sign up. Our messages, photos and files are viewable only by guild members.

To join the group, you will need either a Yahoo account, or a Rogers High-Speed Internet account. If you don't have either, Yahoo accounts are free and easy to set up.

Note: If you are using your Rogers account, use your email address, including the "@rogers.com" part, as your "Yahoo! ID, ie "janedoe@rogers.com" is the Yahoo! ID.
