OVWSG

Resource Centre

Since 2003, the OVWSG has operated a Resource Centre at Heartwood House at 153 Chapel St, Ottawa ON. Please click here for a map and driving directions.

Access

Any current member of the Ottawa Guild may access the Resource Centre whenever they wish.

During Heartwood House Hours

Heartwood House hours are Mon-Fri 9-4. During these hours, simply sign in at the front desk of Heartwood House and present your valid membership card and one of the staff will unlock the door for you. They do not have a key to the library cupboard. If you wish to call ahead to ensure Heartwood house is open and the staff person has a key, call (613) 241-5937.

Outside Heartwood House Hours

At any other time you can obtain a key for the building and Resource Centre from Jan Scott, Laurie Harkin-Chiasson, Mary Morrison, Ann Sunahara, or Pat Trudel. Call or e-mail any one of these members to make arrangements to pick up a key. Their contact information is available on the Membership list, available on the Yahoo Group

Reminder on Access – At the meetings, usually someone is available to greet members at the side door. If not, the side door has a buzzer system. Top entry is Heartwood House & OVWSG. Punch in the code (1002) which will ring the phone in the RC. Whoever is in the RC answers phone and presses/holds "9" to unlock the door for you.

Heartwood House is also accessible by OC Transpo routes 2, 7, 14 and 18.

Workshops and Courses

The OVWSG offers many courses and workshops in weaving, spinning, and dying, for very reasonable fees. Well-known instructors have provided us with invaluable knowledge and information over the years. The workshops have proven to be very popular, and many of our own members have the expertise to conduct many of the workshops offered.

Fun Days

On the second Sunday of each month we have a Fun Day at the Resource Centre from 10 am to 4 pm. This is a chance to get together informally, to chat, share ideas and learn from each other. Bring whatever you're working on.

If you'd like to learn something new or would like to borrow someone else's equipment for the day, you can post a message ahead of time on the Yahoo newsgroup.

Some ideas for things to do at the Fun Day:

  • Drum carding
  • microwave dyeing
  • wool combing
  • trying out other people's spinning wheels and drop spindles
  • help for beginning spinners and weavers
  • reading the library books
  • spinning new fibres (silk, flax, soy silk, ingeo)
  • sharing samples of different kinds of fibres
  • spinning finer/thicker
  • knitting techniques
  • felting
  • card weaving
  • inkle weaving
