Description: Learn the basics of immersion dyeing and colour mixing using MX Fibre Reactive dyes on cotton. Students will work together to dye up to 96 samples consisting of 6 step DOS scales for 6 primary colours,  all the possible combinations of 2 primaries to make 12 samples of each secondary colour, and a set of example tertiary colours . Safety, good measuring and record keeping practices and basic colour theory will also be covered. We will mount the samples at the end of class and all students will leave with a completed sample book. All equipment and supplies will be provided. NB: MX Fibre reactive dyes are for dyeing cellulose fibres such as cotton, Tencel and bamboo and can also be used for silk; if you are interested in dyeing protein fibres such as wool, mohair please see “Dye the Colour Wheel – Acid Dyes”

Prerequisite: None

Students should bring: Comfortable shoes, apron or smock, gloves (if you prefer non-disposable ones), lunch if possible as we will be taking smaller breaks rather than a longer lunch break. Pen and paper if desired for notes.

Materials Fee: $25 includes all dyes and assistants, sample skeins, sample mounting materials, calculation sheets, disposable gloves.
